How to Stick to New Year Resolutions

 

It’s that time of year again when we decide it’s time to get serious with our health!  Eat less, eat healthy foods, stop the snacking, go to the gym, get on your bike or take up running.  While some will find it easy, there are some who struggle to create and maintain their goal.  If you are one of the latter, then here are some pointers that may help you achieve what you are wanting.

To achieve what we want, we first need to train the mind, get our headspace clear and sorted.  Choosing a life changing goal can seem daunting, so making changes in bite size pieces is very handleable and therefore we are more likely to succeed.  When we succeed we feel good about ourselves and are more likely to make our new habit our lifestyle.

Choosing the exercise or fitness we most enjoy plays a big part in our long term success.  It’s easy to maintain a routine when we are doing something we enjoy, so don’t go doing something that feels like a chore, choose an activity that excites you every day.  Start slow, maybe every second day until you build up your fitness and stamina.  Joining like minded friends and sharing your activity is also super refreshing and way more fun than grinding it out on your own.

 

The same goes with making changes in your food habits.  Don’t freak out and make your new way of eating so far out and force yourself to eat things you won’t enjoy.  Food is there to enjoy!! Every meal, every snack!  There is a multitude of fresh foods available to choose from.  Get your imagination on and mix and match your favorites to create a delicious masterpiece.  If you are lost for ideas, you are only a ‘Google’ away from healthy and delicious meal ideas.  Trying to change all your meals and snacks at once will be hard, both mentally and physically.  If you have had not so good habits for some time, you could find it hard to change.  Take your time, change one meal only for the first week.  Maybe start with breakfast, then change your choice for lunches the following week.  Don’t beat yourself up if you slip from time to time, you are only one meal away from beginning again.  The key to success is to ENJOY your new life.  Try new recipes and ideas one at a time and become a pro at what you do, impressing your friends.

Now that you are exercising, some form of protein is really important, not only for your muscles but it feeds your brain with dopamine - the chemical that makes us feel good!  The most important time for a protein fix is your breakfast.  Packing your system with protein will sustain you for longer and reduce food cravings throughout the day.

So how to stick to new year resolutions? 

You are the master of your destiny, you choose what level of activity is best for you, not what others are doing.  Movement in any form is better than not moving.  Being consistent and enjoying your new life is way more important than how much you do.  Making habits will become a way of life and it can only get better and better for you and you will soon see the results.

Being in control of your life will give you a sense of power, so take control, take that first step and enjoy the new you <3
